You know a man is serious about the Blues when he legally changes his name to reflect his craft. For Harpdog Brown "Blues is life. Blues is Truth" and this is apparent when you listen to this 'old school ' harp wizard play his brand of early electric Chicago Blues. But his masterly conduit of the Blues doesn't stop with his imaginative harmonica playing as Harpdog is a true triple threat with his distinctive voice and his original songwriting. All his talent is put together in a distinctive Blues package that makes him one of Canada's most engaging and entertaining Blues artists. After more than 30 years in the business, winning the coveted Muddy Blues Award and a Juno nomination for 1995 album "Home is Where The Heart Is" there is no doubt Harpdog Brown is just getting going - he's won the Maple Blues award two years in a row for Harmonica Player of the Year and is nominated for three Maple Blues Awards in 2016 for Harmonica Player of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Recording of the Year for Travelin' With The Blues, a critically acclaimed album his triage 'Harpdog Brown and the Traveling Blues Show' released in September 2016.
Needless to say Hornby Island Blues Society is thrilled to welcome back Harpdog Brown to our 2017 Workshop, he looks sharp and he sounds even better! Students will be enthralled by his unorthodox style as both a harp player and instructor, helping students to grow as players by teaching them how to listen and how to play from the heart and the ear. This year Harpdog will also be accompanied by guitarist Jordie Edmonds to demonstrate the working relationship between harp and guitar, the way they interact in order to create some beautiful Blues. It will prove to be an exciting instructional package.
